Shantideva's Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life

All levels.

For as long as space endures.
For as long as living beings remain.
Until then, may I too abide.
To dispel the misery of the world.
Dedication from Shantideva's Bodhicharyavatara (The Way of the Bodhisattva).

The teachings on the bodhisattva deeds are based on Shantideva's inspirational verses on Mahayana aspiration and practice. Composed over 1,000 years ago, they are still widely regarded as the most authentic and complete guide for the practitioner dedicated to the enlightenment of all beings. A classic, ranging in scope from simple practical techniques for dealing with destructive emotions to the most refined discussion of ultimate truth.

Bodhisattva is a being who has developed the awakening mind (bodhicitta mind). Bodhicitta is the altruistic intention to attain full enlightenment for the benefit of all beings without exception. Bodhicitta is the most effective means to accumulate merit and enhance our spiritual potential, and at the same time, is the most powerful method for countering negative tendencies and destructive impulses, which is the essence of the spiritual path. So, Bodhicitta practice lies at the root of both temporary and lasting happiness.

We Americans can understand someone who diligently devotes years to becoming a world-class athlete. We focus on transforming our bodies (and wonder why we aren't happy yet).
